  • The former wartime defense chief who had contested the presidential polls against the Premadasa won the by-polls.

SriLanka’s ruling party presidential candidate Sajith Premdasa accepted his defeat in the presidential bypolls and congratulated his rival former wartime defense chief, Gotabaya Rajapaksha, who won the presidential bypolls.

“It is my privilege to honor the decision of citizens of SriLanka and welcome Gotabaya Rajpakasha as the Seventh president of SriLanka,”said Premdasa.

He has also resigned from the post of deputy leader position from the ruling United National Party.

As per the results, Gotabaya defeated Premdasa by margin of 13 Lakh votes.

RajaPaksha will be succeeding Mathiripala Sirisena for a five-year long term. The swearing-in ceremony for RajaPaksha will held at AnuradhaPura on Monday.

Gotabaya RajPaksha is the second member form the RajPaksha family to become the President. His brother Mahindra RajaPaksha had served as the President for two terms from 2005 to 2015.

RajPaksha garnered maximum votes from the Sinhalese communities of SriLanka while Premdasa garnered votes from Tamil communities in Northern and Eastern Province. Rajpaksa had promised that he will strengthen ties of SriLanka and China if he becomes the President. SriLanka’s relation with Asian Superpower had worsened due to pending debt of the Island nation. Premdasa had more inclination towards India and USA.

Rani Wickremesinghe is likely to resign from his post of Prime Minister as it as per speculations, Gotabaya will recommend his brother’s name for the post of Prime Minister.

The son of veteran politician Ranasinghe Premadasa who was assassinated by the members of LTTE is a seasoned politician and an abled administrator. He was a top military defense official when the SriLankan government fought against LTTE.
