J. Nehru wanted CAA ACT, but for Pakistan’s religious minority
Modi said that even Jawaharlal Nehru wanted Indian citizenship for religious minorities from Pakistan. And so he defended the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
He said that Jawaharlal Nehru wrote to the first chief minister of Assam Gopinath Bordoloi. And saying there was a need to differentiate between Hindu refugees and Muslim migrants. Also, he said that Jawaharlal Nehru wanted to defend minorities in the then West Pakistan. As well, East Pakistan which is now Bangladesh. However, Modi said that Nehru was a big thinker.
Modi on Nehru-Liaquat Agreement
“Why did he not include all citizens but mentioned only religious minorities in the Nehru-Liaquat Agreement?”, Modi asked. Liaquat Ali Khan was the first Prime Minister of Pakistan. He said that his government is saying today what Nehru had said decades ago.
Modi said that the government was fulfilling the wishes of the founding fathers.
While referring to the Citizenship Amendment Act, President Ram Nath Kovind, in his address to the joint sitting of Parliament on January 31 had said that Mahatma Gandhi wanted to bring back religious minorities facing persecution in Pakistan.
Shashi Tharoor participated in the conversation
Shashi Tharoor, participating in the debate of the Motion of Thanks said that Mahatma Gandhi was only partially quoted to defend the law.
Modi went on to cite examples of Bhupendra Kumar Dutta and Jogendra Nath Mondal who were two freedom fighters and had decided to stay back in Pakistan after partition.
Modi said that Dutta had told the Constituent Assembly of Pakistan that Hindus were being targeted in the country and had later migrated to India before his death.
Mandal was the first law minister of Pakistan and he too identified systematic ethnic targeting of religious minorities in Pakistan, Modi said.
Modi said that in his youth he had touched the feet of Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan and named other eminent personalities like Ashfaqullah Khan, Begum Hazrat Mahal and APJ Abdul Kalam to assert that they were all Indians.
