  • After the removal of Section 370, Jammu and Kashmir has been in a state of crisis, because of which many students of schools haven’t been able to attend classes
  • More than half the portion hasn’t been completed, but authorities have decided to conduct examinations at the same time, without any delays
  • Most of the students have only finished 50% of the portion, and are now requesting the potion to be cut down, or the examinations are deferred
  • The parents are especially worried, as the environment for education is wary and they feel unsafe
  • Many government and private schools have conducted home examinations while the schools were shut

The government and Private schools in Jammu and Kashmir have been shut since August 5, due to the removal of the special status of the state, officially making it a Union Territory. Due to this, only half the portions for the school year have been completed, and children haven’t been able to study much.

However, in spite of this, the examinations are to be held at the same time they are held every year, without any reduction in syllabus. Further, fees have also been charged by the school administrations for the days that the schools were shut. In view of this, the students and parents have expressed their dilemma stating that if the examinations are held at the same time with no reductions in portions, they will be unable to secure very good marks, worsening the pressure. At the same time, if the examinations are postponed, the students will miss a whole year.

Thus the students have requested the Board to either postpone the examinations and give them more time to prepare, or reduce the portions.

One of the students, Nyla, about to give her 12th board examinations, facing a similar problem has told the press,

WE HAVE BEEN INSIDE OUR HOMES SINCE AUGUST 5. THERE HAS BEEN NO CLASSES AND STUDYING IN THE PREVAILING ENVIRONMENT HAS BEEN VERY DIFFICULT. HOW CAN WE PREPARE FOR THE EXAMINATIONS?

In the valley, there has been a shutdown of all services, and not just public education but even private tutors have suffered due to the same. While the government schools opened up gradually, the students still wouldn’t attend classes. Many of whom cannot afford private tuition, haven’t been able to avail that option as well.

One of the parents, Javed Ahmed, whose son studies in class 12 says,

“THEY HAVE NOT COMPLETED THE SYLLABUS, THERE HAVE BEEN NO CLASSES FOR THE SECOND SEMESTER. THE ATMOSPHERE IS NOT GOOD FOR PRIVATE TUITION AND LEARNING. HOW WILL THEY APPEAR FOR THE EXAMINATIONS? HOW WILL THEY FARE? IN TODAY’S WORLD OF CUT THROAT COMPETITION MERELY PASSING IS NOT AN OPTION, THE STUDENTS HAVE TO SECURE VERY GOOD MARKS. ALL THIS IS ADDING TO THE PRESSURE IN THEIR MINDS ALREADY HAVE.”

Most of the private schools asked the students to complete assignments and homework and present them in flash drives during the days that schools were shut. On the other hand, government schools have started holding home examinations for the lower classes.

So far, The board is uncompromising on the situation, and the examinations are supposed to be held as per schedule.
