The mountainous state in northeast India called Nagaland finally got its first-ever woman MLA today, and it all happened after complete 6 decades since it attained statehood. Hekani Jakhalu, from BJP’s ally NDPP, won the Dimapur-III seat. The lady was standing among four other women of the total 183 candidates who contested the Nagaland assembly elections. Mrs. Jakhalu defeated Lok Janshakti Party’s, Azheto Zhimomi. Another woman candidate Salhoutuonuo Kruse, also from the NDPP, is leading in the Western Angami seat.

Who is Hekani Jakhalu?

Now, when it comes to talking about the personal details of the most searched name on the internet then we would like to tell you that, Hekani Jakhalu Kense 44 years old, is an Indian lawyer and social activist from Nagaland. She set up a non-governmental organization named YouthNet Nagaland to help the youths of Nagaland in pursuing business opportunities. She was previously honored with the Nari Shakti Puraskar award in 2018. Born in Nagaland’s Dimapur. She attended Bishop Cotton Girls’ School in Bengaluru and Lady Shri Ram College in Delhi, where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in political science. After completing her undergraduate legal studies at the University of Delhi, she pursued a law master’s degree at the University of San Francisco.

Jakhalu returned to Delhi and started a legal profession after working in the United States. She was made a partner in the company, but after observing firsthand a large number of young Nagalandis moving to Delhi, she made the decision in 2006 to relocate to Kohima, the capital of Nagaland, in order to found YouthNet, an NGO with the mission of expanding opportunities for Nagaland’s youth. YouthNet claimed to have assisted 23,500 people as of 2018 and employed 30 people. It aims to support business owners as they follow their ideas and establish a “Made in Nagaland” shop in Kohima where they may sell their handmade creations. The “Made in Nagaland” facility launched an online store in after two years of operation.

Nagaland Assembly Elections

As we all know that the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP), is being led by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio. The NDDP has been in an alliance with the BJP since the last elections in 2018. The alliance had won 30 seats in the previous elections while NPF won 26. Now, the ruling NDPP-BJP alliance has to tighten its belts to occlude power in Nagaland, where counting is underway. 

It is important to note that on February 27, elections were held for 59 Assembly members. Postal ballots and electronic voting machines (EVMs) were first counted for the 59 seats in the Nagaland Assembly at 8 am. According to the EC website, the BJP was leading in 11 seats, while the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party was leading in 24 seats. This Nagaland Assembly election had four female candidates: Hekhani Jakhaulu, Salhoutuo Kruse, Hukali Sema, and Rosy Thompson. According to the EC website, Hukali Sema of the BJP is also in the lead from the Atoizu constituency, while Salhoutuo Kruse of the NDPP is leading from the Western Angami seat.
