Less than three months before the assembly elections in Delhi, the union cabinet on Wednesday has approved the proposal for the regularization of unauthorized colonies.

Delhi has around 1797 unauthorized colonies which constitute of 40 lakh residents.

‘Ownership rights have been given to nearly 40 Lakh people living in unauthorized colonies in Delhi. The cabinet has taken this decision today,” said Union minister Shri. Prakash Javedkar while announcing decisions taken by the government.

The announcement comes in the run-up to elections in Delhi. Unauthorized colonies, that comprises of a sizable vote base, have been a major issue in the national capital and saw prominent focus in the manifesto promises of both AAP (Aam Aadmi Party) and BJP (Bharatiya Janta Party).

“Today the population of Delhi is over 2 crore. There has been a long-standing demand to do something about the unauthorized colonies. The last attempt to do something was in 2008. There are unsafe structures that have been constructed and because they are unauthorized, the central government cannot provide services. This the most farsighted and progressive step that has been taken by the central government,” said Hardeep Singh Puri, the Minister of housing and urban affairs.

He further stated that the government of Delhi had sought time till 2021 and had decided to move ahead with the matter.

The people living over there will be given ownership rights which will give them the authority to take permission for construction. As Delhi holds a special status, its matters regarding the land come under the government’s Ministry for Housing and Urban affairs.

In July, Cheif Minister of Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal had made an announcement that the central government had approved the decision made by the state government. He had directed cabinet ministers to accept the central government’s demands on the regularization of unauthorized colonies. The government claims that they have spent around Rs. 6000 crores on the development of these colonies.

Regularization of unauthorized colonies has been pending for a very long time. However, successive governments have failed to take a final call on the matter. Earlier this year, the committee was formed headed by Lieutenant Governor Anil Bajjal to finalize the process.

The five-year term of Delhi assembly will be coming to an end in February. In the elections that were contested in 2015 AAP had emerged with a clear majority of 67 seats out of 70 seats. In the Lok Sabha elections, Bharatiya Janta Party had swept all the seven seats from the national capital.
