On Monday, 30th September 2019, a Kochi locality, Sreepriya Kaladharan had an accident on the way from her home at the Ernakulam District when she faced a pothole on the streets. She managed to escape, however, suffered a few serious injuries on the leg. Nevertheless, she managed to drive her bike to her office, from where her colleagues took her to the hospital.
On the same day, another duo travelling on the same bike, on the same road, hit the pothole. While one of them managed to escape, the other man- Umesh Kumar, 37 years old- didn’t survive. Umesh was hit by a private bus and underwent fatal head injuries and was crushed to death.
The incident grabbed media attention when Sreepriya posted a picture of her injured leg on her social media handle. She states that when she was riding the bike, she noticed the pothole, but couldn’t evade it as there were vehicle on either side of her. She thought that she would ride over it, but lost her balance and fell down. A car was coming up behind her but luckily pressed the brakes.
While her colleagues were driving her back from the hospital, they had to cross the same road and noticed a huge crowd around the accident area. That was when Sreepriya came to know about the death caused by the potholes. She said that if only the potholes were closed just a few days prior, this wouldn’t have happened. According to eye-witnesses, Umesh was also wearing a helmet when the accident happened.
What is being done?
The two incidents occurred just days after Ernakulam District corporation issued a warning to improve the quality of the roads. Many of the roads have also been rectified. The potholes which killed the 37-year-old were under the Kochi Corporation, and officials are to face punishment for disobedience of orders.
