External affairs minister S.Jaishankar defends India’s right to buy a missile defence system from its ally-Russia despite of threat of sanctions from the United States.

On his visit to Washington, Mr Jaishankar said India was discussing the U.S. concerns over India’s deal with Russia of buying S-400 missile defence system. He passed a statement that the team would not like any state to tell them about which deal they have to sanction and which shouldn’t be sanctioned by them.

India, an ally of Russia had signed a deal of buying five S-400 systems for $5.2 billion. Russia has passed a statement that delivery is on track.

Under 2017 law, the US imposes sanctions against countries over purchases from Russia due to Moscow’s military intervention in Ukraine and Syria. Turkey, a NATO ally also had signed a deal with Russia on similar grounds. This decision made by Turkey had angered the nation. U.S. President Donald Trump had ended the involvement of Turkey in the F-35 fighter jet program.

In addition to this, Trump has also imposed sanctions to force all the countries to avoid buying oil from Iran as it seeks the clerical regime’s influence in the Middle East. In May, Trump had ended waivers for India as it was a leading customer of Iranian oil.

Currently, India has been teaming up to expand Iran’s Chabahar port, a way to ensure a supply route to Afghanistan that bypasses Pakistan, India’s rival and ally of Taliban.
