Here are Details on World cancer day, Cancer types, Cancer treatment and symptoms.

What is Cancer?

when we grow, our body cells divide into new cells and replace dead cells in a controlled manner. When this rate gets altered, and cells start growing abnormally, cancer starts. Such a mass of cells is called a tumor. All tumours are not cancerous. Though, all cancers form tumours. Noncancerous tumours do not spread to other body parts. Cancerous tumours spread to other body parts and also inhibit the growth of cells in a body.

Diagnosis for Cancer

The earlier the cancer is treated, the more the chance of getting cured. Some cancer types – skin, mouth, testicles, prostate, breast and rectum – may be detected by routine self-exam or other screening measures.

Cancer diagnosis begins with thorough checkups and medical examinations. The laboratory tests of urine, stool and blood can detect abnormalities that may help in detecting cancer. When a tumour is suspected, imaging tests such as computed tomography (CT), ultrasound, magnetic resonance image (MRI), X- Rays and fibre- endoscopy examinations help doctors determine cancer’s location and size. To confirm the diagnosis for cancer, a biopsy has to be performed and a tissue slice of the suspected tumour has to be studied under a microscope to check for cancer cells.

If the diagnosis is positive,i.e. cancer is present, other tests are to be performed for specific information about cancer. This follow – up phase is known as staging. The most important thing doctors need to know is whether it has spread to other body parts as well or not.

Treatments Of Cancer

Depending on the stage and type of cancer, treatments to eradicate cancer or slow its growth is chosen. The choices may include some combination of surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, hormone therapy or immunotherapy.

Cancer Support

Support from doctors and nurses are also essential to the treatment. The goal of this is to relieve pain, maintain general health, improve quality of life, and provide emotional, psychological and logistic support to the family of the patient.

It is the most common treatment for cancer. In this process, certain drugs are used to kill cancer cells or stop them from growing in the body. The doctor can prescribe chemotherapy only, or combined with surgery or with radiation therapy.

The patient can take chemo in the form of pills or shots. One can also get infusion from clinics, i.e. getting drugs through the IV.

To help the body take control again and regain strength and growing of new cells, one may be required to take chemo for a few weeks. Depending on the type of cancer one has and its severity, the person will be required to take chemo once in a week or weeks or months. The oncologist prescribes chemo considering

  • The type of cancer
  • Whether he has had cancer before
  • If the person suffers from other health conditions like diabetes or heart, kidney or liver disease

Why You Need Chemotherapy?

Even after surgery, a few cancer cells may be left that would grow later and harm the body. These can also give rise to new cancer cells. Chemo drugs can kill off the cancer cells, fight them, keep tumour cells from growing and attack the cancer cell’s genes to kill them off.

If one has bad allergies, they may take an allergy shot. Each shot will consist of a small amount of allergen – that causes the allergy. The body develops immunity against that particular allergen.

Its relation to Cancer?

Well, researchers feel that immunotherapy treatment will actually use one’s body’s natural defence power to fight off cancer cells.

Knowing The Limits of Holistic Care

Holistic care treats the whole person: mind, the body as well as spirit. It is a combination of traditional and complementary medicine. Eg. A holistic way to treat cancer could include chemotherapy and acupuncture. Medical treatments like chemo and radiation solve the problem but have side effects too.
