India seems to have crossed the 8000 mark as 8356 cases of COVID-19 have been recorded. The Union Health Ministry said that the death toll has hit 273. In the last 24 hours, India reported 909 new cases and 34 deaths.
These latest figures have been recorded as various states have been pondering on extending the 21 day lockdown.
Over 1.7 million people have been infected globally. The novel coronavirus has also led to more than 1 lakh deaths. The United States has passed the gloom milestone of 20,000 coronavirus deaths. This was on Saturday as huge masses of people celebrated the Easter holiday weekend at home.
At least 20,506 people have been killed amidst this outbreak. This has put the U.S. as the leading country in the world in the number of deaths. According to John Hopkins University, the number of declared infections is at least 527111. This is in accordance to a tally maintained by the Baltimore – based John Hopkins University.
Italy is the hardest hit country in Europe. It has a population a fifth of the size of the U.S. The country has recorded 19,468 confirmed virus fatalities.
Hopes had begun rising in Western Europe and heavily infected parts of the United States. This is as China’s Wuhan, the disease’s original epicenter was returning to normal. The officials there had been lifting stay indoors restrictions.
The churches were supposed to have been empty on Easter Sunday. It marks the climax of Holy Week for the world’s two billion plus Christians. The congregations shuttered at home as an effort to fight against the virus.
The hardest hit countries of Europe and centers of infection in the United States – New York and New Orleans- have been seeing signs that the infection rates are leveling off.
