- In a statement, the ministry of home affairs said the Union Territory of Ladakh comprises two states Leh and Kargil.
- The other part of Jammu and Kashmir that consists of Srinagar, Jammu, Pahalgam to name a few will be part of Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
The political maps of newly-formed Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, released by the Survey General of India, shows Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir consists of 22 districts including Muzaffarpur and Mirpur in PoK. The Union Territory of Ladakh, according to the latest map, has two districts Kargil and Leh, with later being encompassed by Gilgit, Gilgit Wazarat, Chihilhas, Leh and Ladakh.
The Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir comprises of Kathua, Uddhampur, Doda, Kishtawar, Pulwama, Poonch, Kulgam, Rajouri, Budgam, Anantang, Srinagar, Gunderbal, Bandipora, Baramullah, Kupwara, Mirpur and Muzaffarbad.
In 1947, the former state of Jammu and Kashmir comprised of Kathua, Jammu and Uddhampur, Reasi, Anantnag, Baramulla, Leh, Ladakh, Gilgit, Gilgit Wazarat, Poonch,Mirpur, Muzaffarabad and Tribal territory.
On 5th August Parliament had approved the bill for reorganization of the state of Jammu and Kashmir into Union Territories- Jammu Kashmir and Ladakh. The state government of the former state of Jammu and Kashmir had reorganized the areas of 14 districts into 28 districts.
The names of the new districts are Kupwara, Bandipur, Ganderbal, Srinagar, Ramban, Shupian, Kargil, Sambar, Kishtivar and Doda.
Kargil earlier was a part of Leh and Ladakh district. The Leh district of the new Union Territory of Ladakh has been defined in Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization Second Order, 2019, issued by the President of India, to include the areas of the districts of Gilgit, Gilgit Wazarat, Chilies and Tribal Territory of 1947, along with the remaining areas of Leh and Ladakh districts of 1947, after carving out Kargil.
Jammu and Kashmir will now be headed by Lieutenant Governor Girish Chandra Murmu and Ladakh will be heade by Lt. Governor RK Mathur.
This is the first time that state has been carved into union territories . Now, total no. of states in the Indian subcontinent are 28 and Union Territories are nine.
The Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir will have legislature like Puducherry and Ladakh will not have its own legislature like Chandigarh.
