Minister of State for housing and urban affairs; Hardeep Singh Puri, announced that a new parliament building will be given to the country within five years. This is one of the dream projects of PM Modi. PM Modi wished for the reconstruction of following buildings:
- North block
- South block
- Rashtrapati Bhawan
- Parliament building
Above buildings built between 1911 and 1927, when Britishers shifted their capital to Delhi.
Target of the govt
Government targeted to shift to the new buildings by the Monsoon Session of Parliament in 2022.
About Sansad Bhawan
Sansad Bhawan originally called as the House of Parliament, outlined by British architects; Sir Edwin Lutyens and Sir Herbert Baker in 1912-1913. Fabrication of the Parliament House began in 1921 and finalized in 1927. Parliament House was Inaugurated by the then Viceroy: Lord Erwin. After sometime, Bhagat Singh also threw a bomb in the Parliament.
The design of the Parliament is influenced by an eleventh-century temple known as Chausath Yogini Mandir. The temple is situated in Morena Madhya Pradesh. The shape of the building is circular, based on Ashoka Chakra. At the center of the building, there is a central chamber and surrounding this, are the semi-circular halls or D-shaped halls. These were built for the sessions of the chamber of princes (now used as the library hall), State council (now used for the Rajya Sabha), and the Central Legislative Assembly (now used for the Lok Sabha).
Why there is an announcement for New building?
- Space: Lack of space for the workplace of 780 MPs along with the other staff.
- For safety issues, buildings are not earthquake resistant.
- approx 100 year old building
- Number of seats will sure to rise after 2026.
- Secretariat buildings’ rent. After making of new buildings, It will be govt. owned.
- lack of Parking space, amenities and space
The Big Question: Where these buildings be built?
Government has not notified anything about it. The tender has been out. Possibly it will build nearby or the old buildings itself will be renovate completely.
