Dharavi is a community in Mumbai which has a habitation of more than a million people in a five square km area. It has reported its first death due to COVID-19. The deceased is a 56-year-old.

The concerns have heightened because the deceased has no foreign travel history. He ran a local garments shop in the locality. The entire society, where he lived has been sealed. The area has over 300 flats and 90 shops.

Dharavi is one of the most congested parts of Mumbai. It is also one of the largest slums in the world. The 56-year-old patient tested positive on Wednesday. Later in the night at Sion Hospital, the patient passed away.

Rajesh Tope, the Maharashtra Health Minister, said that before this the virus seemed classist but now the masses are being affected as well. It is a matter of concern as the virus reached a congested place like Dharavi.

High risk contacts in the area have been stamped by the authorities. They have also been placed under quarantine following detection.

Kiran Dighavkar, the ward officer said,” Swabs of all family members and residents of the building are being sent for testing. All senior citizens and patients with respiratory illness in Baliga Nagar will be tested.”

He also said that food and ration will reach the building which will be ensured by BMC.

Minister Rajesh Tope also said that over 4000 health workers are on the job of testing and tracing the suspected cases.

Nearly 70 to 80% of Maharashtra’s cases have travel history while the rest have had it from contact. The Maharashtra government is following the policy of 3Ts. The 3Ts are tracing, testing and treatment to identify all cases in the state.
