Chief Minister of Delhi has made a statement regarding Air Pollution in Delhi; that pollution levels in Delhi have been reduced by 25% in a period of 4 years.

In 2014, WHO declared Delhi as the most polluted city in the world in the study named; a global study in the air quality trends. From 2014 onward, Air pollution in Delhi has gained attention. After been declared as the most polluted city in the world, Judiciary, central government and State government had come up with many schemes.

Data about Air Pollution in Delhi

  • In 2010, from the pollution controlled committee, Delhi started monitoring the air quality in the city. The air quality monitoring started with 4 stations(2014) later turned to 26 (2018).
  • In 2012, Delhi showed the worst Air quality because of stubble burning in Haryana and Punjab.
  • Since 2012 concentration of Particulate matter has fallen.

PM 2.5 and PM 10

According to the DPCC (Delhi Pollution Control Committee), from 2012 to 2019; PM 2.5 has been reduced. Moreover, it has reduced to 128mg/m3 in 2018 from 160mg/m3 in 2012. PM 10 has reduced to 277mg/m3 from 371mg/m3. PM 10 is most prominent in winters primarily because of open burning and construction works. On August 19, 2019, the average concentration has been reduced to the double-digit for the first time since 2012 that is; 288mg/m3.

Delhi’s Weather

  • Delhi’s air quality depends upon the weather. There are local features for weather conditions. In winters, due to the stability of air, the pollution level is high as compared to the summer season.
  • Another reason would be to crop burning from the neighbouring states like Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Punjab.
  • Dust storms added the sum to the pollution levels.

Factors responsible for the reduction in pollution

  • Supreme Court’s Orders: In 2014, Lawyer Vardhaman Kaushik approached the NGT (National green tribunal), his petition became the basis for further orders related to the environment. Supreme Court upheld the validity of the order and banned all old petrol and diesel vehicles in Delhi.
  • Government efforts: Between 20140-2017, Delhi govt, CPCB (central pollution control board), Environmental Pollution prevention and control authorities carried out certain drives and implemented the orders passed by the NGT in order to curb the air pollution.
  • GRAP (graded response action plan): In 2017, central govt. notified GRAP. The NCT Delhi regions had been given a road map for action.
  • Two thermal power plants have been shut down
  • Completion of the eastern and western peripheral expressway for vehicles. Therefore, without touching the city vehicles could move to the other parts.
  • Ban on PET coke as an industrial fuel.
  • Introduction of BS Vl norms or Bharat stage Vl for vehicular emission.
