Gully Boy, a motion picture, developed around the life of the Street rapper Divine, has been selected as the official Indian entry for the 92nd Academy Awards being held in 2020. The awards are set to be held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. Gully boy was directed by Zoya Akhtar and starred by Ranveer Singh as Murad and Alia Bhatt as Naezy. the official release of the film was on February 14 2019.

The movie has been critically acclaimed with an imdb rating of 8.3/10. The news was delivered to the public by the Farah Khan, the producer of the movie herself. She congratulated the entire crew. She tweeted saying,

In competition for the selections were the movies Anandi Gopal, Andhdhun, And the Oscar goes to, Article 15, Baba, Badhaai ho, Badla, Bandishaala, Bulbul can sing, Dear comrade, Ghode ko jalebi khilane le Jaa Riya hoon, Hellaro, Kesari, Kontho, Kurukshetra, Mai Ghat, Crime no. 103/2005, Nagarkirtan, Olu, and many more.

The contention for last year was Village Rockstars for the 91st Academy Awards. It was a low budget film, shot through the lens of a hand held, low-quality camera. It, unfortunately, didn’t last the final rounds of selection. Throughout time, only three Indian feature films have made it to the final nominations for the Oscars- Lagaan, Mother India and Salaam Bombay!
