Pool car notice to Kolkata schools.: The school education department issued a circular asking 26 reputed schools instructing their students to avail either carpool or school buses by next April. The personal vehicles are restricted except “exceptional cases”.

Details of the issued circular Pool car notice to Kolkata schools:

The schools were directed to introduce a system of buses and carpools. Whichever would be easy, for the transportation of students.

The step is a move towards decreasing traffic congestion as well as the pollution levels of the city. The decision was reached after a series of meetings attended by school authorities, government representatives and Kolkata Police personnel.

All schools were asked to introduce their own fleet of buses or if required hire school buses. Also, an official said that the schools can no more shrug off their responsibilities. Added that they have no control over private carpools or buses. So, parents who refuse to accept the pool car or bus services of the school will have to form a pool facility with the children coming to the school from the same locality.

The state government is ready to give subsidy to the schools who want to purchase state buses, a government transport official said.

La Martiniere Schools, Don Bosco Park Circus, Lakshmipat Singhania, Birla High are some of the schools that had been sent the circular.

The withdrawal of the circular:

Education Minister Partha Chatterjee said that schools can not alone decrease congestion or pollution. He also said that pollution is not limited to places around schools. It is a global problem. He also said that the circular would not be implemented in any form in the future.

A circular had already been issued by the La Martiniere to its parents. But, the school withdrew it.
