- Mr. Girish Chandra was an IAS officer (Indian Administrative Officer) and was good friend of Prime Minister right from PM’s tenure as Chief Minister of Gujarat.
- Besides this, RK Mathur was appointed as Lt. Governor of Ladakh and P.S. Sreedharan Pillai was appointed as Governor of Mizoram.
President, Shree Ram Nath Kovind appointed Girish Chandra Murmu as the first Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir.
During the monsoon session of Parliament, an act was passed regarding the reorganization of the state. The bill was sought for the bifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir into two union territories, one being Jammu and Kashmir and other one being Ladakh.
Prior to the presentation of the aforementioned bill, the bill for the abrogation of article 370 that gave a special status to the state of Jammu and Kashmir and bill to bring the state under presidential rule was passed in the parliament.
“President is pleased to appoint Mr. Girish Chandra Murmu as the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir. Governor of Jammu and Kashmir is transferred and appointed as Governor of Goa, said a government official on Friday.
The outgoing governor of the state is Satyapal Malik. Mr. Girish Chandra was an IAS officer and was good friend of Prime Minister Narendra Modi since his tenure as Chief Minister of Gujarat.
Along with Murmu being appointed as Lt. Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, Radha Krishna Mathur was appointed as Lt. Governor of Ladakh. The appointments of both the Lt. Governors was passed by President Shree Ram Nath Kovind.
Mr. Kovind had earlier passed an order for the abrogation of article 370 and 35-A amidst the introduction of the act for the reorganization of the state.
Apart from these appointments, Kovind had also passed the proposal for the appointment of Sreedharan Pillai as the s governor of Mizoram.
