  • A couple in Derbyshire are growing trees and training them to shape into furniture for sustainable means of utilizing wood
  • They own a “furniture” farm in where they are currently nurturing 250 chairs, 100 lamps and 50 tables
  • They started experimenting in 2006 and first started off with chairs
  • They said that the start was rocky and unsuccessful as their crops were destroyed

A married couple, Gavin and Alice Munro , Hailing from Derbyshire, UK own a “furniture” farm where they harvest trees shaped like furniture- tables, chairs and lamps. Currently the farm is nurturing 250 chairs, 100 lamps and 50 tables.

They are doing so to create a sustainable environment. Gavin Quoted,

” instead of force growing a tree for 50 years and then cutting it down and making it into smaller and smaller bits… the idea is to grow a tree into the shape that you want directly. it’s a kind of zen 3d painting”

Where did they derive their inspiration from?

Gavin states, that when he was a young boy, he saw a bonsai tree which resembled a chair. He was also born with a crooked spine for which he continuously had to wear a metal brace, to keep it upright. The attitude of the doctors towards him, which pushed him to keep the brace on, led him to believe that he could shape trees too, using the combination of compassion and skill.

When did they start?

The couple kickstarted the idea in 2006 , before they were married using two small plots in the Peak district. In 2012, after they got married, they committed to the job full time, and named the company “Full Grown”.

They say that although the start had been difficult, as they lost their crop to wild animals, they now are on the process of growing plants annually.

How did they do it?

The couple guided the shoots in the right direction once they started growing , and avoided the process of guiding them the wrong way. They use methods of compassion and care to make sure that the trees didn’t develop a stunted growth pattern.

A chair of average build takes approximately 9 years to grow completely.

How much does the furniture cost?

Chairs sell for around 10,000 pounds, tables for around 900 pounds and lamps for 2500 to 12500 pounds.

An order needs to be placed much in advance.
